Oat milk is a type of plant-based milk which is creamy and quite tasty. It’s a good dairy-free milk substitute. Oat milk is unique because it’s free of many of the allergens found in other types of milk.
It may benefit bone and heart health. Oat milk is often enriched with A vitamin, B vitamins, such as vitamin B2 and B12, etc. B vitamins are essential for optimal health, besides they promote healthy hair, nails and skin.
Manufacturers may add this vitamins to oat milk to provide some nutrients found naturally in cow’s milk.
Oat milk is good for using in different vegan recipes. You can use it in pancakes, cereals, biscuits, or just add it to your smoothie. It’s a fantastic option for thickening soups and stews. You can also just drink it straight up.
Of course it’s better to choose unsweetened version. You can buy it here.
This is a quick and easy 2-ingredients way to make homemade oat milk.
To make oat milk simply pour 1 cup of rolled oats with 3-4 cups of boiled water (I used distilled water, so I do not boil it). More about water distiller you can read here.
Let stand this mixture for several hours. Then blend it for 3-4 minutes. Then strain through several layers of gauze or strainer.
You can also add salt, some dates for sweetness, vanilla extract and so on. Keep it in a fridge for 2-3 days.
In the first year on a healthy plant-based nutrition we tried not to buy this milk, preferring homemade one. The reason was added vitamins and other additional ingredients. We sincerely believed that vitamins should be only natural, received from eaten fruit and vegetables.
Half a year after changing the diet, I found out that my iron level was below normal indicator. I can’t say 100% that before changing a diet it was normal, but much earlier it was always high. It decreased only during pregnancy in 2012.
For a month I have been eating a lot of plant foods, fruit and vegetables that contain iron, but my iron did not rise. Eventually I had to take a supplement. I wrote about my experience here.
In that article a shared information with you about this supplement and gave you the link. But after taking this iron I got tested to see the results. I found out that my iron level rose only just a little.
It turned out that iron should be taken with other additives so that it is better absorbed. I chose another one. I have been taken this supplement for a month and my recent analysis showed a good result. You can see this supplement here.
Therefore, sometimes we buy foods and oat milk despite added vitamins. To my mind, it’s more important to avoid harmful chemical ingredients, dyes and preservatives.
And of course listen to your body!
